Memories of sandy shores by *NormaL-UseR:iconNormaL-UseR:

I walked along those dusty streets
After the rains had fallen
The ground was pock marked
Where the droplets had fallen
The sky was blue
With no memory of the recent storm
The air humid from the evaporating water
That's when it hits you, the smell
Of mother earth, a musty smell
Of freshness, of the cradle of life

'From Him do we come and to Him do we return'

We say it after someones death
But it is something said in celebration of new life

I search in my mind for memories
Of the busy city from whence I came
And can recall no similar smell
The memory of that place a bad dream
Growing hazier by the day
You to them are a stranger
With outlandish, uncouth ways
They to you are a thing of wonder
Their laughter genuine, their smiles generous

'Life is a dream when we die we wake up'

It is as if I have woken up
As here is a different life altogether

Don't get me wrong
It is no easy place to dwell
A place where poverty is a way of life
Of bribes, overcrowded, politically volatile
But a place vibrant and zestful
A place of flux where the blood of the innocent
Has been spilled and mixed into a concoction
For the greedy and gluttonous to drink
Yet, a place of extremes, of extreme innocence
And also extreme corruption, of extreme wealth
And also the squalors of the shanty villages

'Travel, for it will enhance your soul'

I will take a lot away from these sandy shores
As I gaze out one final time into the blue waters of the sea

I have learnt humbleness
I have learnt happiness
I have learnt to laugh again
I have learnt to throw away my ego

Until we meet again on these sapphire and golden shores
We'll both have changed a lot since then

I like this.. =) Oh yes I do know that smell you're talking about! Although it was just the grass, but it was beautiful... And yes, I do believe the city is a very.. stressful place to live in. No natural scenery.

'From Him do we come and to Him do we return'

This is a very creative usage of that line... I never thought about it that way. Beautiful..

yeah, i live in the woods, in a really little town far away from the city. been here all my life. so i am very familiar with that smell- i love it. never really been to the city, tho. i mean, a school trip to Washington DC, visiting with relatives in NYC, and that's pretty much it. very short visits. every time i see the city, though, i think that it would be amazing to live there, at the same time that it would be horrible. honestly, if i don't have anyone to cling to in the streets, i get so wigged out 'cuz i don't know my way around. ^_^;;; but the city is beatiful, in it's own way. especially at night. but i think, the lack of trees and fresh air would probably wear me down more than anything. i love going for walks along forest roads, and looking up to see the sunlight coming through the treetops... i know. i'm such a country bumpkin.

Actually the place I am writing about is the capital city, but it is in Africa - Tanzania to be precise - in East Africa, which is on the coast. When I went the first time one of the first things I noticed was the smell - an earthy smell, a very distinctive smell which I remember to this day. I've been to a lot of countries, but Africa was a special place to me, it is difficult to describe how I feel for it - but hopefully through the poem you can see. When you leave you really miss the place, and when you come back to your own city, you feel sad. But it is also a very difficult place to live aswell, because of many reasons.

I am a city person myself, and it is a pretty fast paced, stressful life, but I think as wherever you are as long as you have a good family, friends, community, and yourself you have a good heart - you can be happy.
